Sailing and Rowing

Sailing and Rowing with
Ōwairaka Sea Scouts

We have a Sea Scout Standard Cutter (5.2m/ 17 foot) and a similar size "Crown" class dinghy.
We also have two Sunbursts. Although we sail competitively with other groups our aim
is to involve the Scouts and Venturers in learning skills. Any placing in a race is an added bonus.

What do I wear to go sailing?

  • Beanie (wool or polar fleece not cotton or acrylic)
  • Wetsuit if you have one.
  • Thermals (top and leggings)
  • Togs
  • Windbreaker- essential!
  • Warm socks
  • Shoes that will get wet (closed in toes)
  • Hair ties (if you have long hair)
  • Towel
  • Warm complete change of clothes for afterwards
  • A bag to keep everything together
Optional

  • An extra polar fleece/ woolen jersey to wear on the boatif you get cold (especially if you don't have a wetsuit).
  • A dry bag

Bring everything you can and then you can decide what you
need to wear based on the conditions where we launch

Cotton clothing is best avoided as it soaks up a lot of water
that wicks away a lot of heat, and remains cold for a long time.

The Scout Group supplies everyone with a lifejacket / PFD to wear for each trip.
